What is your name and job title?

My name is Karol and I am a trainer at the FFA in Forrestfield, in Perth.

How long have you worked for BHP?

I am approaching 18 months working at BHP.

What does a typical day at BHP look like for you?

Usually I will get to work half an hour early to get everything set up, grab a coffee and have a chat to my supervisor about the day ahead. Once the students arrive, it's full steam ahead for 10 hours with a combination of theory and practical work.

What’s your favourite thing about working at BHP?

I really love the variety of people I work with, everyone has a different story and I learn from them as much they learn from me.

What is something you think people would be surprised to know about your role or BHP in general?

Usually when I tell people what I do for work and how virtual reality training is incorporated, they want to know more about what I do. I have recently been certified to deliver training in a virtual world with the help of my colleagues in McKay. This is an excellent tool that allows the user to be immersed in a virtual world without the risk of getting hurt. You can do all sorts of really interesting things such as looking at how a fuel system works on a dump truck, to changing out a Warman pump on a piece of fixed plant. We even have virtual welding machines that will allow the user to perform stick welding and MIG welding, it's so accurate and a great way to prepare the user for the real thing without the dangerous fumes involved

In the last year, what has been your or your team’s greatest achievement?

The team I am in - including 2 trainers and a supervisor - our greatest achievement is having our class complete their studies and go to site ready to hit the ground. We have recently received our next batch of students and hopefully when they get to site, this will be our next achievement.

What are you most proud about working for BHP?

Being able to transfer my knowledge to the students and seeing the students do well, this is the most important thing to me.

What are you passionate about when you’re not at work?

I love spending time with my family and being on the bike.

What tips would you give someone looking to join the mining industry?

Always give 100% effort, always give it a crack and always respect the people you work with.
