Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia - Oyu Tolgoi LLC and the National Emergency Management Agency are partnering to organise the nationwide 'Be Ready' campaign on earthquake disaster prevention from 15 May to 9 June.

The National Security Council of Mongolia, the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister of Mongolia, the National Emergency Management Agency, and the Office of the Governor of the Capital have come together to organise the Strategic command staff training from 7 June to 9 June. The objective of the training is to prevent earthquake disasters, minimise risks, enhance earthquake preparedness, and promote effective coordination among various disaster protection departments, ministries, agencies, local administrations, as well as the military and law enforcement agencies while educating the public on earthquake responses and ways to protect themselves and their families. The ‘Be Ready’ campaign is being initiated and implemented in connection with the training.

On 12 January 2021, a major earthquake with a magnitude of 6.7 struck the Khankh soum, Khuvsgul province, followed by an alarming 137,849 subsequent occurrences, which is seven times higher than the average frequency of earthquakes recorded over the previous decade. In light of these events, the general public will be informed about the dangers of earthquakes, preventive measures, and preparedness as part of the 'Be Ready' campaign, aligned with the law on disaster protection.

Between 2011 and 2022, Mongolia experienced a total of 327,576 earthquakes. Here is a breakdown of the earthquakes by magnitude:

Three earthquakes with a magnitude of 6-6.9.
18 earthquakes with a magnitude of 5-5.9.
238 earthquakes with a magnitude of 4-4.9.
Either 1,717 earthquakes with a magnitude of 3-3.9 or 1,976 earthquakes with a magnitude of 3-6.9 were recorded during this period.
In 2022 alone, 58,266 earthquakes were recorded:

112 earthquakes with a magnitude of 3-3.9.
19 earthquakes with a magnitude of 4-4.9.
Three earthquakes with a magnitude of 5-5.9.
In Ulaanbaatar, 12,589 earthquakes were recorded between 2011 and 2022, including an earthquake had a magnitude of 5-5.9, six with a magnitude of 4-4.9, 61 earthquakes with a magnitude of 3-3.9, and 68 earthquakes with a magnitude of 3-5.9.
